Sometimes the easiest way to share a file with someone in the same room as you is to send it over the internet. Not, like, through the internal network but through social media or a file hosting site. This is easier and faster than pulling out a USB stick.
So even though we are in the same room together, that file has to escape the house, travel a great distance to some company's server in a different country, and make the same trip back just to end up at nearly the same place it started.
